The Prenup Paradox: Love, Money, and the New Normal

Couples are increasingly opting for prenuptial agreements before tying the knot, signaling a shift away from traditional notions of romance and commitment. This trend is driven by a desire to protect assets, but also reflects a growing recognition that marriage involves financial responsibilities.

For younger generations, prenups are about more than just safeguarding wealth; they’re also an opportunity for couples to have open and honest conversations about their financial futures. Millennials and Gen Z are leading the charge, with nearly half of married millennials in the US reporting having a prenup. In the UK, around one in three under-35-year-olds sign on.

The “Great Wealth Transfer” is contributing to this trend. As younger generations inherit vast assets from their parents, they’re seeking to protect those inheritances from being squandered in divorce proceedings. Becca Gibson, 33, expects to inherit property from her parents and wants to ensure that she can keep it safe in the event of a split.

Critics argue that prenups represent a new era of cynicism and distrust in relationships, where couples are more focused on protecting themselves than each other. However, advocates see them as an opportunity for women to clarify their rights from the start. “It’s not an advantage for me… but it’s a fair situation,” Becca says of her agreement with fiancé Dave.

Having a prenup can also be seen as a sign of maturity and commitment. As Celine Tsoi puts it, having one “can show you what the person you’re going to marry is like.” Julia Rodgers, co-founder of HelloPrenup, emphasizes the importance of open communication: “We want to make sure we have honest, transparent conversations about life goals, finances, roles and responsibilities… so that we can have a long, happy marriage.”

The prenup trend reflects a society increasingly focused on protecting its assets. As couples navigate this new landscape, one thing is clear: love and money will never be far apart.
